History of Downtown

In early times, Flagstaff was home to the Sinagua.  In the 1800s, Mountaineer Antoine Leroux and Edward Fitzgerald Beale explored the area and eventually established a trail through the area.  The city of Flagstaff was established on July 4, 1876. To celebrate the United States Centennial, they had a flag-raising.  Many historians tell us that is where Flagstaff got its name.

In 1882, the railroad was built in Flagstaff, Arizona.  The railroad brought many people to the area and turned it into a hub of commerce and industry.  The town continued to grow.  Many businesses like hotels, shops and restaurants catered to the travelers coming to Flagstaff.  When automobiles were invented, Route 66 replaced the original wagon trail.  Route 66 was the major road connecting the west coast to the east coast.  Along with highway, Flagstaff grew even larger.
