Lowell Observatory is best known for the discovery of Pluto in 1930 by Clyde Tomaugh. It is also famous for being the oldest observatory in the United States. Percival Lowell founded it in 1894. The ongoing contributions to planetary science, stellar studies and telescope technology. With more than a century of history, Lowell continues to lead in the field of astronomical education.

Take a guided tour
Join a daytime or evening tour and learn the history of observatory. See the telescopes and learn about each of them. Tours are led by expert astronomers and teachers.
Telescope Viewing
Stargaze at the Giovale Open Deck Observatory for solar viewing or nighttime viewing. You can also visit the historic Pluto Astrograph or the historic Clark Dome. See our galaxy through the telescopes. On select nights the observatory opens their doors to see planets, the moon and more. A view of Saturn can’t be missed.
Dark Sky Planetarium
Get the General Admission Plus ticket for admission to the Dark Sky Planetarium laser- guided stargazing shows. The planetarium is Lowell’s newest attraction.
Interactive Exhibits
Enjoy the exhibits at the Origins Gallery, the Orbits Curiosity Zone or the Stardust Lab which features hands-on activities perfect for kids and adults. Get up close to meteorites or learn more about solar flares.
Programs & Events
Attend one of the regularly scheduled talks or events in the Lowell Universe Theater. Programs dive deeper into topics like dark matter, space exploration and the history of astronomy. Make sure to attend a “Meet an Astronomer” seminar.
